A heat transfer fluid is a gas or liquid involved in heat transfer by acting as an intermediary in cooling, transport and storage of thermal energy on one side of a process, and heating on the other side of a process. Heat transfer fluids are used in numerous applications and industrial processes that require heating or cooling, typically in a closed circuit and continuous cycles. For example, while coolant cools an engine, the heating water in a hydronic heating system heats the radiator in a room. For higher temperatures, oil or synthetic hydrocarbon or silicone based fluids offer lower vapor pressure. They generally have a high boiling point and a high heat capacity. Its high boiling point prevents heat transfer fluids from evaporating at high temperatures. The high heat capacity allows a small amount of refrigerant to transfer a large amount of heat very efficiently.
