A heat transfer fluid is a gas or liquid that is involved in heat transfer, serving as a medium in cooling on one side of a process, in the transportation and storage of thermal energy, and in heating on the other side of a process. Heat transfer fluids are typically used in countless applications and industrial processes that require heating or cooling, in closed circuits and continuous cycles. For example, while cooling water cools an engine, the heating water in a hydronic heating system heats a radiator in a room. For higher temperatures, oil or synthetic hydrocarbon or silicone-based fluids offer lower vapor pressure. They generally have a high boiling point and a high heat capacity. The high boiling point prevents heat transfer fluids from evaporating at high temperatures. The high heat capacity allows a small amount of coolant to transfer large amounts of heat very efficiently. It is a high boiling point, low to medium viscosity heat carrier with high thermal stability for heating and cooling in a liquid or vapor phase in an inert gas atmosphere.
